Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya – San Cristobal de Las Casas Chiapas

Returning to Chiapas after two years, a NEW world class textile museum was waiting to be explored. The Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya is located in the Convento Santo Domingo in San Cristobal de las Casas, which underwent extensive renovations to accommodate Guatemalan textiles from Formento Cultural Banamex Collection and the Pellizzi Collection of Chiapan textiles. Excellent state of the art lighting, displays and investigative opportunities await the visitor. Signs are in English and Spanish and many of the textiles are from the 1970’s – 80’s considered a renaissance period for Mayan textiles. As a collector I certainly was happy to see excellent examples of ceremonial garments from Chiapas, Guatemala and three perfect cross-stich embroidered huipiles from Yucatan. These are included in the following slide show. If you are ‘doing textiles in Chiapas’,  don’t miss this museum as well as the Sergio Castro Collection – open evenings by appointment and explored in a past post.

    • Yes Shannon, it’s truly a Maya Mundo Textile world! I also posted new pics of Sna Jolobil on my ‘Textile shopping in San Cristobal’ past post. It’s the Museum store here and has the BEST (and most expensive) stuff. Too die for!
Hope on the over-night bus and check it out!

    • Hi John – Nope – I’m in CA and soon to return to NM.
But I hope to be back in Chiapas in November.
      Whatz up?

      • Sheri,

I am in charge of a trip for Los Amigos in January and need some help in the planning. Have any ideas? We stayed at the Holliday Inn on the last trip. We also have just gotten a house in SF in January and will be in town for the Folk Art and Spanish colonial shows. Ideas and suggestions are appreciated.
        Thanks,
        John

  1. Hi Sheri,
I was on the trip with Stephanie visiting Vera Cruz and Oaxaca in Oct. 2014. Torie, Mary and I then went on to Morelia and Patzcuaro. I’m from New York. The last time I saw you was when we parted in Oaxaca. I hope that u are well. I was just in Mexico City and was disappointed at the quality of textiles available compared to Oaxaca. I am going to a Shibori conference in Oaxaca in November. I’m wondering where you are and what are you doing? I’m hoping to go to Chiapas on this trip. I hope that you get this email and that we can reconnect.

    Best,
    Marie Zazzi
